We’re often asked: “Is it really safe to have a vein procedure if you’re in your 80s?”
It’s a great question. Thankfully, a group of researchers set out to answer just that in a recent study.
And the results might surprise you.

What’s the Concern with Vein Treatments After Turning 80?
As we age, many people develop varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency—conditions that can cause leg pain, swelling, and even skin ulcers.
One of the most effective treatments is called venous ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that closes off malfunctioning veins.
But for people in their 80s, there’s often hesitation: Is it too risky?
What Did the Study Find?
A study published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders looked at this exact question.
Researchers reviewed the outcomes of 155 patients aged 80 and older who underwent venous ablation, then they compared them to younger patients.
Here’s what they discovered:
Safe and Sound: The procedure was very safe for octogenarians. There were no major complications like deep vein clots or serious infections.
Just as Effective: Older patients experienced the same level of symptom relief as younger ones—less pain, less swelling, and better mobility.
Quick Recovery: Because the procedure is minimally invasive, recovery time was short—even for those in their 80s.
Why Does This Matter?
This study challenges the idea that age should be a barrier to treatment. If you’re in your 80s and struggling with leg discomfort, you don’t have to, “Just live with it.”
With proper evaluation, venous ablation can be a safe and effective way to improve your quality of life.
Final Thoughts
Think of it this way: If your legs are holding you back, a simple vein treatment might just be your personal fountain of youth. Don’t let age stop you from feeling your best.
