Why Do My Legs Feel Heavy at the End of the Day?

Having tired, heavy legs at the end of the day can be exhausting and impact your quality of life. While you could be experience leg fatigue for many reasons, it may also be a sign of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI).

Discover Common Sources of Evening Leg Fatigue

If your legs feel heavy at the end of the day, it may be the result of factors such as:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing

  • Poor circulation

  • Overexercising

  • Weight changes

  • Pregnancy

However, it's important to be aware that leg fatigue can also be caused by an underlying condition. A few conditions that may cause leg fatigue include peripheral artery disease, a cardiovascular disease that narrows the arteries, and lumbar spinal stenosis, which narrows the spinal column.

One of the most common causes of heavy legs is venous disease. When the tiny veins in your legs weaken, blood can struggle to flow back to the heart. Obstructed flow causes blood to pool in your lower limbs, leading to a weighted-down feeling and visible leg swelling by the evening.

When your veins become too weak over time, you can develop venous disease, such as CVI, where the veins in your legs become damaged. Varicose veins, when left untreated, can advance venous disease and cause leg fatigue due to poor circulation. Every year, about one in 50 adults with varicose veins develops Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

Recognizing Heavy Legs Caused by Varicose Veins

Varicose veins and CVI go hand in hand. If blood starts to pool in your legs, the pressure can cause significant leg swelling from veins and visible lines on your skin. Some common symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Bulging veins: Blue or purple twisted veins can appear just below the surface of the skin. These veins often appear in clusters, which may also include tiny red or blue spider veins.

  • Heavy legs: After physical activity or a long day, leg muscles can feel fatigued due to blood pooling.

  • Persistent pain: You may experience pain in your legs, especially behind the knees, as well as muscle cramps.

  • Skin discoloration: Left untreated, varicose veins can lead to skin discoloration or, in extreme cases, ulcers.

How to Relieve Heavy Legs From Varicose Veins at Home

In some cases, home care can provide temporary relief for heavy legs caused by varicose veins. Here are a few tips for home relief from varicose vein symptoms:

  • Leg elevation: To relieve some of the pressure in your legs, prop them up above your heart to let gravity assist with blood flow.

  • Compression wear: Wearing medical-grade compression stockings gently squeezes the legs to help promote circulation.

  • Regular movement: Ensure you get regular light exercise, such as simple calf raises or a short walk. Avoid prolonged periods of sitting and standing without moving your legs.
