Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, bulging veins that occur when blood pools in your legs.

Normally, the veins in your legs use valves to carry blood back up to your heart.

As we age, the veins and their valves can weaken, causing blood to flow backward and pool.

This abnormal flow is called venous reflux and can lead to varicose veins.

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

While varicose veins are often thought to be cosmetic, they are actually a medical concern as they are associated with a large number of symptoms.

In fact, they can be quite debilitating. Some of the mild-to-severe symptoms include:

  • Leg pain or discomfort

  • Aching

  • Fatigue

  • Swelling

  • Heaviness

  • Throbbing

  • Blood clots

  • Night cramps
  • Open sores or ulcers

  • Restless leg syndrome (RLS)

Will Insurance Cover my Varicose Vein Procedure?

Varicose vein procedures are typically covered by insurance.

To make the treatment process as easy as possible, Miller Vein accepts more than 700 insurance plans.

Need to pay over time? Miller Vein has also partnered with CareCredit to offer you flexible payment options.

Do You Remove Varicose Veins?

Good news! We don’t usually need to remove varicose veins.

We frequently treat problematic veins with minimally invasive techniques, such as thermal ablation, VenaSeal™, or sclerotherapy.

These procedures close down the veins, naturally rerouting blood flow, eliminating the need for varicose vein removal.

These treatment options are frequently performed in under 15 minutes and require no downtime. You should begin to see significant improvement shortly after treatment.

What is Thermal Ablation?

There are two types of thermal ablation. In laser ablation, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein, and laser energy is used to heat and close the vein.

In radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a thin ClosureFast™ catheter is inserted, and radiofrequency energy is used to heat and close the vein. Once the vein is closed, circulation improves as blood is naturally rerouted to healthy veins.

What is VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal™ is a modern treatment for varicose veins, closing affected veins with a specially formulated medical adhesive.

During the procedure, your board-certified vein specialist will insert a tiny catheter into the problematic vein to seal it and reroute blood flow to nearby healthy veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Also known as endovenous chemical ablation (EVCA), sclerotherapy uses an FDA-approved medicine to close down abnormal veins. The medicine can be made stronger by making it into a foam.

Some patients only need a single treatment, although additional treatments may be needed, depending on the number and size of the veins.

What is a Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy (often referred to as an MP) is a safe and effective in-office procedure used to remove varicose veins through small incisions and a local anesthetic.

The incisions are so tiny that no sutures or stitches are required.

Will Spider Veins Go Away After Varicose Vein Treatment?

Spider veins will remain after varicose vein treatments. So, while these medical procedures won't eliminate spider veins, Miller Vein's signature VeinErase® treatments do.
