What are Varicose Veins?

The Effects of COVID on Varicose Vein Procedures

During the height of COVID-19, many elective procedures, including varicose vein treatments, were postponed to prioritize urgent medical needs and reduce the risk of virus transmission. This led to a significant increase in waiting times for patients needing varicose vein procedures.

Here’s What We Learned

The study included 275 patients who had been waiting for varicose vein treatment for over a year. The results were concerning:

• Major Harm: 6.9% of patients experienced major complications such as phlebitis, bleeding, and ulceration.
• Minor Harm: 18.9% of patients reported worsening pain and swelling.
• Psychological Harm: 6.9% of patients suffered from psychological distress due to the delay.
• Quality of Life: The delay in treatment significantly impacted patients’ quality of life, with many reporting a decline in their physical and mental health.

What Does it All Mean?

The study highlights the importance of timely intervention for varicose veins. Delaying treatment can lead to a progression of the disease and increased risk of complications.

As we navigate the post-pandemic world, it’s crucial to address the backlog of elective procedures and ensure that patients receive the care they need. This study serves as a reminder that conditions like varicose veins, though often considered low priority, can have serious consequences if not treated promptly.
