What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are visible tiny blood vessels (different from varicose veins) that sit just beneath the skin’s surface. They typically form web-like or branching patterns and measure 1mm or less in diameter but larger spider veins are possible too. They can appear in shades of red, blue, or purple and show up most often on the legs, though they are also common on the face.

These veins develop when small blood vessels weaken or dilate due to increased pressure. Several factors can contribute to their formation, including genetics, hormonal changes, prolonged standing or sitting, sun exposure, and age. Pregnancy is another common trigger, as rising blood volume and hormonal shifts put extra pressure on the veins throughout the body.

Spider veins are generally harmless, but they can cause physical discomfort for some people and may sometimes point to a deeper vein condition that deserves attention.

• Before Treatment
  Your specialist begins by thoroughly cleaning the skin in the treatment area. Depending on the sensitivity of the area being treated and the patient's personal preference, a topical cooling agent may be applied to help keep the skin comfortable during the procedure. No injections of local anesthesia are required for most VeinGogh™ treatments.
• During Treatment
  Using a magnifying lens to ensure precise visualization of each vessel, your VeinErase® specialist brings the hair-thin VeinGogh™ probe into contact with each targeted vein. A rapid microburst of radiofrequency energy is delivered through the probe, heating and collapsing the vessel instantly. The probe is moved methodically from vessel to vessel, treating each one in sequence. Most patients describe the sensation as a very brief, sharp snap or flick against the skin with each pulse, similar to the snap of a thin rubber band. Most patients find the overall experience very manageable. The face is more sensitive than the legs, and your specialist will work carefully and considerately throughout. A full VeinGogh™ session typically takes between fifteen and thirty minutes, depending on the number and distribution of vessels being treated.
• After Treatment
  Immediately following treatment, it is normal to see some redness and mild swelling in the treated area. This typically resolves within a few hours. You do not need a bandage, and there are no wound care requirements. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after leaving the clinic. The treated vessels will appear slightly darker or more prominent immediately after treatment, before they begin to fade. This is the normal response as the closed vessels are being processed by the body. Fading typically progresses over the following one to four weeks.
