We’re often asked: “Is it really safe to have a vein procedure if you’re in your 80s?”
It’s a great question. Thankfully, a group of researchers set out to answer just that in a recent study. And the results might surprise you.
As we age, many people develop varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency—conditions that can cause leg pain, swelling, and even skin ulcers. One of the most effective treatments is called venous ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that closes off malfunctioning veins.
But for people in their 80s, there’s often hesitation: Is it too risky?
A study published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders looked at this exact question. Researchers reviewed the outcomes of 155 patients aged 80 and older who underwent venous ablation, then they compared them to younger patients.
Here’s what they discovered:
This study challenges the idea that age should be a barrier to treatment. If you’re in your 80s and struggling with leg discomfort, you don’t have to, “Just live with it.” With proper evaluation, venous ablation can be a safe and effective way to improve your quality of life.
Think of it this way: If your legs are holding you back, a simple vein treatment might just be your personal fountain of youth. Don’t let age stop you from feeling your best.
