The Role of Ultrasound in Assessing Skin Changes

Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. In this study, researchers used ultrasound to examine the skin and soft tissue changes in patients with CVD. They focused on different layers of the skin, including the cutaneous layer (CL), subcutaneous layer (SCL), and the dermo-hypodermal junction (D-HJ).

The study involved 54 patients with chronic venous disease (CVD), and a total of 98 limbs were evaluated using ultrasound. Here are some of the key findings:

  • Dermal Edema: This was the most common finding, observed in 60.2% of the legs. Dermal edema refers to swelling in the skin due to fluid buildup, which can be detected by ultrasound even when the skin looks normal to the naked eye.
  • Skin Thickening: The study found that the thickness of the skin layers varied among patients. Thickening of the cutaneous layer (CL) and the subcutaneous layer (SCL) was common in more advanced stages of CVD.
  • Inflammatory Changes: Ultrasound also detected signs of inflammation in the skin, such as increased echogenicity (brightness on the ultrasound image) and the presence of infiltrates (collections of inflammatory cells).

Early detection of skin changes using ultrasound can help doctors intervene sooner, potentially preventing the condition from worsening.
